How to Prep for the Perfect Spray Tan

Getting a spray tan is more than just adding color — it’s about feeling confident, glowing, and comfortable in your own skin. Whether it’s your first time spray tanning in Minneapolis or you’re a regular in Maple Grove, a little prep goes a long way toward getting that flawless, natural tan Bare Sunless Studio is known for.

Here’s everything you need to know to walk in (and out!) with the perfect glow.

Why Prep Matters

Think of your skin as the canvas for your tan. The smoother and cleaner it is, the better your results will look — and the longer they’ll last. With over 3,000 beautiful bodies tanned, we’ve learned that great prep is what separates a “pretty good” tan from the wow, you’re glowing kind of tan.

Step 1: Exfoliate (But Keep It Gentle)

Exfoliating 24 hours before your appointment helps your tan go on evenly. Use a gentle, oil-free scrub or exfoliating mitt — we love a good full-body buff with our Tan Erase Glove or Blank Canvas Sunless Tan Remover.

Skip anything oily, though! Oil can leave a layer on your skin that blocks your airbrush tan from developing evenly.

Step 2: Shave or Wax Ahead of Time

If you shave or wax, try to do it at least 12–24 hours before your appointment. This gives your pores time to close and helps avoid little “dots” from forming.
Afterward, don’t apply deodorant, lotion, or perfume until after your tan — they can create barriers or patchy spots.

Step 3: Wear Loose, Dark Clothing

Right after your tan, you’ll want to be cozy and comfortable. Bring loose, dark clothing — something soft that won’t rub your fresh glow. Skip anything tight or clingy (like sports bras or leggings).

Our heated airbrush tanning process keeps you warm and comfortable the entire time, but your skin still needs a little breathing room to set beautifully.

Step 4: Plan Your Day Around Your Glow

Try to book your tan on a day when you can take it easy for a few hours. Depending on whether you choose our Classic or Express solution, you’ll need to wait between 3–5 hours before showering.

Avoid sweating, working out, or getting wet while your tan develops. For best results, schedule your tan 1–2 days before your event, vacation, or big moment — that’s when your color will look its absolute best.

Step 5: Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

After your first rinse, keep your skin hydrated every day. It’s the secret to making your tan last longer and fade evenly. Use spray tan-safe products like our Got Me Whipped Body Butter or Oh My Glow Body Oil — both designed to nourish your skin without breaking down your tan.
